Rapides Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Gary Jones will no longer pursue the same position in Lafayette Parish… Yesterday, Dr. Jones released a statement to the media saying, “After much prayer and deliberation, I decided to remove myself from consideration for the Lafayette superintendent’s position. I was very appreciative of the outpouring of local support from the principals and the three mayors, as well as the business community at large. My family and I have enjoyed our eight years here and love living in this community. Therefore, I have chosen to remain as superintendent of Rapides Parish schools.”
Last month, the Rapides Parish School Board held off on offering Jones a contract extension and will instead consider that issue next September. Jones’ current contract runs through 2012.

A Saturday morning shoot out has left one Rapides Parish man dead and another behind bars.
Detectives say they believe it was all over an argument on the Internet.
According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, the vicitim was 33-year-old Michael Hudson Brew. The suspect - Marcus Terrell Howard, accused of getting into a shoot out that left Brew dead.
RPSO Major Jasper Bay of RPSO says their investigation found the suspect had gone to the house to confront the victim about information they had talked about or argued about through social media.
Detectives say they believe what started it all could have something to do with women.
Both Brew and Howard have a record. Howard is being charged with one count each of second degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and obstruction of justice. He's being held in the Parish jail on $560,000 bond.

Wounded Warrior Fellow Sgt. Chris Sullivan will speak at a pre-Veterans Day event at noon Tuesday in the Caffey Annex at Louisiana State University at Alexandria.
The event is sponsored by LSUA's Veterans Support Committee and is free to the public. The purpose is to recognize LSUA's veteran students and their families.
Sullivan served in the Louisiana Army National Guard's 256th Infantry Brigade. He was paralyzed on May 21, 2005, after a sniper bullet severed his spine during a mission in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Office of Conservation will conduct a public meeting near Alexandria on Nov. 8 to provide information about ground water plans.
The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the state emergency shelter at LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research and Extension Station, 8125 U.S. Highway 71 South, near Louisiana State University at Alexandria.
The meeting, one of several being held around the state, will focus on the state's past and current ground water resources management practices and the draft recommendations for a state ground water plan.
A draft copy of the recommendations document can be viewed at.www.dnr.louisiana.gov/draftstatewidewaterplan.
Public comments will be received during the meeting and written comments may be submitted until 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21. For more information about the meetings, contact DNR Office of Conservation staff at (225) 342-8244.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's pick to be Louisiana's next education superintendent says it's not appropriate to talk with education board members about the job until the Nov. 19 election is over.
John White, head of the state-run Recovery School District, says he's focused on his current position and hasn't been talking to the members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education about his candidacy to be state superintendent.
White told the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday that he'll talk about the superintendent's job when BESE is settled and its members certain.
Three of the eight elected BESE seats are in runoff elections. The governor also has three appointees to the 11-member board. BESE will vote on a new superintendent after the new terms begin in January.
