When you think of the best places to buy genuine, quality art, you may think of the bustling streets of New York or New Orleans, or the glamorous cities of Milan and Paris. But have you ever considered right here in downtown Alexandria, Louisiana?

Supporting your local art community is an up and coming trend that everyone is diving into for many reasons. Keeping money local is of great importance in these economically troublesome times. Not only is it great for the local market, buying local artwork helps our talented community thrive. The more support we give, the more art will grow and the quality will increase with our resources.

Just a few suggested areas for purchasing local art downtown are: River Oaks, Alexandria Museum of Art Gift Shop, and Tamp & Grind Coffee. River Oaks exhibits every 6 weeks, and there are 44 current artists in residence, with 3 galleries total. The main gallery features artists that are asked to come by invitation only, with more renowned status, professional main stream, and prolific resume. Local artists learn and broaden horizons from these featured galleries, which helps their career.

Upstairs is Gallery des Amis, reserved for resident artists only with studio space at River Oaks. This gives them an opportunity within the given year to put together a cohesive body of work for show exhibit, which gives ample opportunity for sales.

There is artwork for sale all year long, from the artists who sell artwork in their studio, to the gift shop that features many regional artists.

“It’s a great place to buy art!” says Rachael Dauzat, director of River Oaks.

Also, while you are out getting that fresh brewed coffee, stop by Tamp & Grind to see great artwork by local artists. Each month, the shop features new displays of local art that you can purchase right off the wall!

So the next time you want a great piece for your home or office, try Alexandria’s Cultural Arts District in downtown first and make a difference in our town!
