Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (Central LA AHEC) collaborated with Sheryl Herring to present one of the three total summer workshops that allows the “A-HEC of a Summer” students to participate. Ms. Herring is a Clinical Laboratory Science Instructor at Louisiana State University- Alexandria. This year’s summer workshop featured “Facial Reconstruction” and was available to program participants only. Students from four hospital sites in LaSalle, Vernon, and Winn parishes learned how to reconstruct a face using tissue markers, modeling clay, and glass eyes shaped on a skull base. All students were given materials, handouts, and videos that went hand in hand with demonstration from Ms. Herring. The second workshop will be held on Thursday, June 16 and will have student participants from Avoyelles, Catahoula, and Concordia parishes. The final summer workshop will be Tuesday, June 28 and will involve students from Grant and Rapides parishes.

The “A-HEC of a Summer” program is an excellent tool by which students can explore different health care professions and make decisions about their future based on experience and observation. Students volunteer their time for fifteen days in the summer at their assigned hospital facility.

“A-HEC of a Summer” participants are high school students who have a career interest in the medical profession. The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in health related volunteer work and the freedom to explore career interests in the various fields that comprise the world of health careers.

Students rotate through various departments such as Nursing, Radiology, Pharmacy, Respiratory, Physical Therapy, Emergency Room, etc., at the hospitals to gain hands-on experiences so they can determine for themselves whether or not a health career is a good choice for their future. They are able to obtain knowledge and experience from healthcare mentors, field trips, workshops and guest lecturers. “A-HEC of a Summer” programs are currently being held at the following hospitals: Avoyelles Hospital, Bunkie General Hospital, Byrd Regional Hospital, Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Hardtner Medical Center, Huey P. Long Medical Center, LaSalle General Hospital, Riverland Medical Center, and Winn Parish Medical Center.

Students were chosen on the basis of grades, a written essay, letters of recommendation and an interview. “A-HEC of a Summer” is an accredited high school course for one-half unit elective credit.

Central Louisiana AHEC is a non-profit, community-based agency that serves as a training and information resource for health and education professionals for a 17-parish region. A primary goal of Central Louisiana AHEC is to identify local needs and develop programs that will encourage health professionals to practice in rural and underserved communities where their services are urgently needed. Gabrielle Juneau, program coordinator, states that “this program is an excellent tool for students to enhance their understanding and get great hands-on experience in different healthcare fields. It gives the students an opportunity to see first-hand what a day as a healthcare worker is really like.”

Applications for next year’s “A-HEC of a Summer” will be available in September on Central Louisiana AHEC’s website at www.clahec.org, or by contacting the guidance counselors office at your high school this fall.
